LAPAROSCOPIC BITCH SPAYS are now available

We are delighted to say that we are now able to offer laparoscopic spays as an alternative to the more traditional method of spaying, here at House & Jackson*

What is a laparoscopic spay?

Laparoscopic, or 'key hole' surgery, as it is more commonly known, is well established in human surgery and is now becoming more popular in the veterinary world. A laparoscopic bitch spay is a minimally invasive procedure which involves making 2 small incisions in the abdomen, through which an endoscope (tiny camera) and specialist surgical instruments are passed. Gas is then used to gently inflate the abdomen so that magnified images from the endoscope can be viewed on a monitor by the surgeon during the procedure. The surgeon locates the ovaries and seals off the vessels, before removing them. Unlike a traditional 'open' spay, only the ovaries are removed, not the uterus (womb).

What are the advantages of a lap spay?

  • Smaller wounds (typically 0.5 - 1cm)

  • Less post-operative pain

  • Faster recovery (typically 2-3 days rather than 7-10 days)

Traditional spay

This 'open' procedure involves making a single, larger incision (usually between 5-15cm) in the abdominal wall. The surgeon will then locate the uterus and ovaries, tie off the blood vessels to the ovaries, then remove the uterus. This surgery is generally quicker than a lap spay and requires less fur to be clipped.

In the event of complications during a lap spay, the veterinary surgeon may need to revert to a traditional spay

Suitability

There maybe other reasons why your dog is not suitable for a lap spay, such as weight, health or age. Your vet will be able to discuss this with you. As with all spays, your dog should be at least 6 months old and her last 'season' should have ended approximately 3 months ago.

Not all veteranians are trained in laparoscopic surgery so the number of procedures we can carry out are more limited and timings less flexible. However, the recovery for your dog is likely to be quicker.

Cost

Laparoscopic spays are more expensive than traditional spays.

They are not something every veterinary clinic is able to offer. Performing the surgery requires expensive, specialist equipment, advance training and a greater level of technical skill than a traditional spay. Preparation for the procedure can take longer and as the surgery is more complex, anaesthetic time may be longer, requiring enhanced monitoring and care during and after the surgery.

*Please be aware that we are only able to offer the surgery at our   Blackmore branch due to the specialist equipment and set-up involved.
