Diagnostic Equipment
Video Endoscopy
The Horse Clinic has a full suite of video endoscopes. This
allows the investigation of a wide range of diseases, as well as the
non-invasive treatment of some. Traditionally, endoscopes were
used to look into the respiratory tract of horses, and to diagnose lung
problems. We now boast a three metre long video endoscope, which
allows us to look into the stomach and check for the presence of stomach
ulcers. Other uses of these endoscopes are investigation of bladder
and uterine problems. This equipment can be very useful for the insemination of mares. Deep insemination of mares can only be
carried out with this state of the art equipment. It increases
the fertility rates of sub-fertile mares tremendously.
Radiography
We can take radiographs of the limbs, head, neck and spinous
processes of large adult horses, smaller horses could benefit from
chest, abdominal and pelvic x-rays in addition.
Ultrasound Scanning
The Horse Clinic aims to provide the
best and most high tech scanning equipment available to the veterinary
market. Our new scanner is providing the clinic with an invaluable
tool and can precisely and accurately diagnose many conditions, ranging
from orthopaedic to cardiac or abdominal. Apart from our clinic
scanner, which cannot be moved, we also have a set of ultrasound scanners
predominantly used for ambulatory fertility work but which can be brought to your yard to carry out ultrasound scans outside of the clinic. Diagnosis and interpretation of equine heart problems frequently need our state of the art scanner for a precise diagnosis available for diagnosing and interpreting equine heart
problems, which frequently need our state of the art scanner for a precise
diagnosis.
Echo Cardiography (ECG)
This is available for the diagnosis of heart conditions in horses. This
measuring technique of the electric current across the horse’s
heart is vital for diagnosing any heart arrhythmias. Thomas Schulze,
our cardiologist, is available for diagnosing and interpreting equine
heart problems.
Laboratory
Our in-house laboratory provides us with 24 hour support for the early
diagnosis of conditions. The lab is run by Judith Saunders,
who is a qualified lab technician. Her special expertise in cell
recognition helps us with many diagnoses. The in-house lab also
allows us a fast turn around of more routine blood samples, which helps
our clients in making quick decisions about their horses. Monitoring
of the efficiency of worming through regular worm egg counts
is one of the many assets that the presence of the lab offers horse owners.
